Inca Trail, Intipata

Intipata “Sun Terraces”. This is a mainly agricultural complex with a small residential sector, probably built to supplement the food supply to Machu Picchu.

This was originally cleared in the 1940s, and then allowed to be reclaimed by the jungle in order to protect a rare species of orchid. In recent years, however, excavators have once again begun to clear away the vegetation, uncovering several agricultural terraces and terrace houses. Probably solely an agricultural station, although the site's position means that it could have been used to relay signals from Machu Picchu to the Urubamba River.

The Inca Trail tour is a highly popular way of getting to Machu Picchu, a wonderful place and exclusive heritage of the Incas.
